Caring For Your Wool Blanket
Instructions on the safe caring of your new blanket to ensure it lasts a lifetime
Care Instructions
Wool is a natural, resilient fibre that is fire retardant, does retain smoky odours like other fabrics and will still maintain its warmth qualities even when it gets lightly damp. Wool does however hate a few things:
Hot water
Chemicals
Being wet and hung so that it stretches
How to refresh your Apollo blanket. This is the best part of a quality woollen product.
- Simply shake outdoors occasionally to remove dust and air it out in fresh air (preferably in shade) – wool naturally refreshes itself.
If you do happen to spill something: Spot Cleaning
- Blot (never rub) spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth.
- For stains: mix a few drops of mild wool-safe detergent (or baby shampoo) in cool water.
- Dab the stain gently with a clean white cloth or sponge. Work from the outside in.
- Rinse by dabbing with a cloth dampened in plain cool water.
- Blot dry with a towel and let air-dry flat.
Full Washing (only when really needed)
Wool blankets must be hand washed only.
- Fill a tub or large basin with cool/lukewarm water (max 30 °C / 86 °F). Hot water = felting.
- Add a wool-specific detergent (Eucalan, Soak, or Woolite) or a no-rinse wool wash. Avoid regular detergent or anything with enzymes/bleach.
- Submerge the blanket and gently press/squeeze the water through – never wring, twist, or scrub.
- Let it soak 5–15 minutes.
- Drain the water. Gently press out excess water (you can roll it in a towel and step on it).
- Refill with clean cool water of the same temperature and gently press to rinse. Repeat until water runs clear (or use a no-rinse product and skip rinsing).
- Press out water again – do not wring.
Drying (the most important part)
- Never hang a wet wool blanket – it will stretch permanently.
- Lay flat on a clean surface (towel on floor, drying rack with mesh, or over two clotheslines so no crease forms).
- Reshape gently to original dimensions while damp.
- Dry away from direct sun or heat sources (no radiators, no tumble dryers or hair dryers).
- Turn occasionally for even drying.
Please never store in a sealed container. Store in a breathable cotton bag or pillowcase. Add cedar blocks or lavender sachets for natural moth protection (avoid direct contact with wool; use pouches).
Your blanket is designed to share your memories wherever you are. Due to the hand-crafted nature of the product, the natural fibres and the type of use, we cannot guarantee that it will remain the exact same dimensions nor have a small element of felting. Treat your Apollo with love and it will return the favour.
